On the heels of their 8-1 victory over Dartmouth two days ago, the Yellowjackets paid the Harvard Crimson a visit this Saturday. In a closely contested battle, the Yellowjackets held the advantage at 4-3 but eventually succumbed 4-5 to Harvard’s home court advantage. The Yellowjackets are now 4-1 in the season.

Every once in a while you see a sporting event that is so hard fought and so well played that at some point it occurs to you that you are just lucky to be watching it. That was the case in the Harvard/ Rochester match December 13 at Harvard’s Barnaby Courts. The College Squash Association’s fourth and fifth ranked teams displayed why they sit near the top of the field, and why they are ranked so closely together. When the dust cleared, Harvard, playing after a shockingly convincing loss to Cornell, had come through a crucial test, and Rochester had discovered how challenging it is to dent the record of tho top five CSA teams, especially when meeting them on their home courts.

Read the excellent match report by Kirsten Carlson @ SquashTalk. Also a highlight - the announcement of Bennie Fischer, incoming freshman from Switzerland, who will be joining the squad in January for the rest of the season and adding further depth to the lineup.

University of Rochester

#9 Dartmouth fell just short last weekend with a close 5-4 loss, their first of the season, to #4 Harvard and will be hungry for a win this week. The #5 Yellowjackets had no trouble defending their Liberty League title in November against Hobart, Vassar and St. Lawrence and are now ready to play the bigger matches ahead of them. This first match against Dartmouth will be crucial in getting the Rochester squad off to a good start as they take on Harvard at Cambridge next week in what is already being dubbed as the CSA match of the season.

So come give the Yellowjackets a real home advantage!

High expectations from the Yellowjackets

November 17th, 2008 Mithun Mukherjee posted in College Squash, General

The College Squash Association (CSA) has high expectations from the Yellowjackets this year, ranking them #5 in the pre-season rankings which were released this week. The Yellowjackets finished last season at #10 and have enjoyed a strong recruiting season this year, evident from the stellar new recruits on display at the exhibition on Meliora weekend. Cornell University also jumped up to a #6 pre-season ranking giving upstate NY another boost on the national college squash scene. Read “Upstate New York Soars in Preseason CSA Poll” from the CSA website.
The reigning Liberty League champions will defend their title this weekend in their first match of the season at the 2008 Liberty League Championships as they face off against Hobart, Vassar and St. Lawrence. Also, check out the team’s season schedule under Events.

Update - Nov 20th: Following the ‘08-’09 pre-season team rankings, the CSA has released the ‘08-’09 pre-season individual rankings with three from the Rochester squad in the top 20.

“…The rankings show even more concentration than ever, among the top 25 players, of the top three teams. The only surprise - the number three we are talking about is now Rochester not Harvard….
Rochester, under former PSA top-three player, Scotsman Martin Heath, has seen a meteoric rise in talent and ranking….
…Trinity boasts nine players amongst the top 25 while Princeton garners eight. With Rochester boasting 3 of the top 25 players, the remaining five include two Harvard players, two Yale players and rounded out by one from Cornell….”

Where are they now? Allen Fitzsimmons

October 6th, 2008 Mithun Mukherjee posted in College Squash, General

In another installment of our “Where are they now?” series, we track down former Yellowjacket captain Allen Fitzsimmons’03 who recently joined Mt. Holyoke College as varsity squash coach. Allen captained the predecessors (Dave Easwaren, Pete Avitable, Dave Sokoloff, Gen Izumida etc.) of the current world class team who paved the way for the Yellowjackets’ success in college squash.

From Western Mass Squash:

“…Prior to college, Fitzsimmons never played squash. He arrived at the University of Rochester as a tennis player. During his first year, many members of the Yellowjackets’ varsity squash team graduated. During his sophomore year, Fitzsimmons, along with a few other tennis players, joined the squash team. Squash quickly became his passion. Within a year he was at the top of the varsity ladder, a spot he would occupy for three seasons.
Fitzsimmons has many fond memories from his college squash days. One of his proudest moments came against Amherst College. During the 2001-2002 season, Amherst’s Michael Strong swept Fitzsimmons in a three-game match (9-8, 9-6, 9-2); however, the following season Fitzsimmons rebounded and beat Strong in four games (7-9, 10-8, 10-8, 9-4). Fitzsimmons attributes the victory to his training regimen.
The University of Rochester has enjoyed tremendous success over the last few seasons. Fitzsimmons helped start that movement. If he were playing today, Fitzsimmons believes he would be in the middle of the Yellowjackets’ ladder….”

Brace yourself for the Yellowjackets

July 24th, 2008 Mithun Mukherjee posted in College Squash, General

With the 2008-09 season around the corner, there is a buzz as always in college squash circles about the new recruits. More news from SquashTalk about the key picks for this year. And again, all eyes are on Rochester who are heavily favored to improve on their current #10 national ranking.

…Rochester head coach Martin Heath expects his three freshmen to add depth to the team, which has been regarded for their strong top four. Americans Matt Domenick and Adam Perkiomaki, both members of the Heath coached U.S. Junior Men’s program, and Joe Chapman of the British Virgin Islands, will join the Yellowjackets in the fall. With their touted top four (which could always change) and increasingly strong supporting cast, the team will play a part in a match that will at the very least be one of the most interesting of the season, when Rochester hosts Trinity on February 6.
“It is a real honor for me to have them here,” Heath said of Trinity making the trip to upstate New York.
With the additions to a lineup that already includes two All Americans in Jim Bristow and Hameed Ahmed, Rochester is expected to move up- it’s just not clear how far….

Get to know: Martin Heath

March 6th, 2008 Mithun Mukherjee posted in College Squash, General

A recent article in the University of Rochester’s Campus Times gets to know Martin at a personal level.

Heath credits his brother with getting him started in the sport. “My brother became very good at it and became a squash champion before I had even started, and then I got jealous,” he said…..
…Heath was quick to credit the success as an indication of the caliber of his players. “I don’t think that the University understands how good these guys are,” Heath said. “The fact of the matter is that these guys are not Division III athletes - they’re not even Division I athletes. These are some of the best players in the world for their age.”…

UPDATE Feb 16th: Semis - Rochester bt. Navy 7-2. Through to the final against Bates.

UPDATE Feb 15th: The William’s Ephs edged past the Yellowjackets 5-4 this morning. Close 3-2 losses at #5 and #6 suggest the match could have gone either way. Complete match report from UR Athletics. CSA report. The Yellowjackets will now hope to take on familiar faces, Navy and F&M in the Hoehn division. Their first match is against Amherst tonight.

Fresh from their successful homestand weekend, the UR Yellowjackets face their biggest test yet as they travel to the CSA Nationals this weekend to square off against the best of the best at Harvard’s Murr Center squash courts. Hailed as the biggest success of the year, the team has their work cut out as they play a special “play-in” match against Williams on Friday morning to earn a spot in the coveted A Division Potter Cup. A win against Williams will give them a spot against the mighty Trinity Bantams who are on a 179-match winning streak. A loss will mean that they compete for the B Division Hoehn Trophy. Good luck Yellowjackets!

From the CSA website:

The biggest success story of the year, coming into the Nationals, is the rapidly improving team representing the University of Rochester, coached by former international pro star, Martin Heath. Heath, the former world #4, has assembled a group of student athletes that has moved up seventeen ranking positions in two seasons, an unprecedented rise. Rochester is playing a special qualifying match against Williams College, prior to the start of the draw, for a position in the top bracket for the national championship Potter Cup. The winner of Rochester /Williams , the eighth seed, draws defending champion Trinity in the first round. Rounding out the top eight, who will compete for the national crown, are Princeton [2], Harvard [3], Yale [4] (Harvard and Yale play this Wednesday to determine their final order), Western Ontario, Canada [5], University of Pennsylvania [6], and Dartmouth [7].

Zug on the Excitement of College Squash

February 6th, 2008 Mithun Mukherjee posted in College Squash, General

In the latest post from his blog, The Direct, noted squash historian James Zug describes the unparalleled excitement of a Princeton v. Trinity squash match:

…the scene was pretty rich, with a huge crowd numbering probably around a thousand. Hundreds of texting undergraduates filled the seats. Nervous parents and siblings stood in the balcony. People flew in for the night, people flew in for the day. Much of the Dartmouth men’s team drove down from Hanover. The Yale men’s team, led by coach Dave Talbott, came up from New Haven—they arrived so early that they even slipped onto the courts and hit some. A raft of ex-Trinity players came up from New York….

Not quite a thousand, but the crowd turnout at the UR Squash homestand last weekend was pretty strong. The excitement was especially palpable at the Navy and F&M matches. Given the rate at which the squad is jumping up spots in the college rankings, would it be hard to imagine the Yellowjackets squaring off against college squash powerhouses like the Trinity Bantams or the Princeton Tigers on the home courts in the near future?

UPDATE: Speaking of college squash, heres an article in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated on the Princeton-Trinity showdown last weekend, Trinity’s winning streak and their coach Paul Assaiante. Squash in Sports Illustrated!!! It’s good to see the sport get some mainstream coverage, isn’t it?
