Several junior squash players are traveling around the East coast this season competing to improve their national ranking. Here is a summary of the events.
On Nov 10-12 Kate Guyer traveled with 9 juniors to Williams College. Everyone played extremely well and had some good wins. Eliza & Kate Calihan both took 4th places, and Nick Greaves-Tunnell & Alden Irwin had 5th places. Matthew & Tommy Lampeter, Robert & Forrest Hurlbut, and Alec Greaves-Tunnell all played good squash, but couldn’t quite get the placing.
On Dec 10-12 everyone was off to Brown University in Providence. The Calihan sisters had an extremely successful weekend at Brown with Eliza winning the Girls U15, and sister Kate second in the Girls U13. They both played well and fought until the end. The boys were just as tough against their own stiff competition but did not place as high during this competition. Alex Greaves-Tunnell won the consolation and placed 5th which will help his junior ranking. Brother Nick came in 6th. Peter Tilton, who is a senior and will be missed tremendously next year by all, came in 7th and hopes to do better at the Harvard tournament January 7-9. All the youngsters are training hard for their national rankings with 4 scheduled tournaments to go.
Eight juniors traveled with Kate to Boston January 7-9, 2005, and everyone walked away with a win. Not only are these youngsters playing good squash, but working on the positive attitude and mental toughness that is crucial when it’s just one-on-one in a small box. Nick Greaves-Tunnell finished 6th in the BU13, Kate Calihan took 4th in GU13, and Forrest Hurlbut placed 5th in the BU11.
On January 21, 8 juniors played in Buffalo as the GVC had the most successful showing yet. Everyone’s hard work, dedication & sportsmanship paid off as all players came away with at least one victory. Congratulations to winners: Eliza Calihan (GU15), Nick Greaves-Tunnell (BU13) & A.J. Whitbeck (BU11). Each played strong matches making the most of their strengths and court sense. Rudy Small (BU13), Kate Calihan (GU13) and Alec Greaves-Tunnell (BU15) took second places. Congratulations to Will Greaves-Tunnell, who is 7 yrs old and played in his first competition in the BU11. Here’s a picture of the winningest kids with Kate at the Buffalo tournament.
February 4-6 the action was in Chatham NJ where 6 juniors tried to bring home the trophies.
February 11-13 we had the 21st annual Ward Riley tournament, which was a lot of fun and a great experience for everyone. The Ward Riley junior tournament is held at GVC each year and is one of the premiere events on the junior squash calendar. This year’s results for our local juniors are listed below. Please make every effort to commend these players for such a strong effort!
